Hammers ‘confident’ of signing Shelvey

|

West Ham are “confident” of signing Jonjo Shevey from Newcastle United this summer, according to The Sun.

The Hammers are understood to be keen on the £70,000-a-week [Spotrac] midfielder, and believe that they have a good chance of taking the boyhood Irons fan back to London.

But the report also suggests that Shelvey would ideally like to stay at St. James’ Park this summer, if he is offered the chance to.

OPINION

Make of this what you will. On the one hand, the Hammers seem to be fairly optimistic about bringing Shelvey in to the club that he supported as a boy, but on the other, the midfielder would seemingly prefer a stay in the north east this summer. On the basis of that, you would perhaps argue that they are justified in their confidence, provided Shelvey is turfed out on his ear. You would have to say he could be a really good signing for Manuel Pellegrini’s team. He hasn’t had the best year, granted, but when he is on his game, there are still few players in the Premier League as devastating as he is with the ball at his feet in deep positions. Shelvey can carve teams apart with ease, and having him sitting back and pulling the strings is a properly mouth-watering prospect. Expect this one to run and run.
