Diop names his Players of the Season

|

West Ham United centre back Issa Diop has revealed that he believes goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was the Hammers’ Player of the Season.

The Frenchman lined up in front of the former Swansea City man for the majority of the campaign, and feels like the Pole was head and shoulders above his teammates.

“Lukasz Fabianski,” he told the club’s official website when asked to name his Hammer of the Year. “He was the best player for us. He gives us a lot of confidence with his performances and his consistency and he made so many important saves.”

Diop also shed some light on who he thought the Premier League’s best player was this season: “Eden Hazard,” he said when quizzed on the top flight’s finest.

OPINION

Let’s get the Hazard thing out of the way first of all, shall we? Look, the Belgian had a superb start to the season and a pretty damn good end to it as well. In between, though? Not so hot. He was never poor, but over the festive period and into the New Year he wasn’t quite at it. So to say that he was the Premier League’s best player this season is slightly off the mark. There’s no way he was consistently better than the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva. Perhaps Diop feels Hazard was the best because of the stunning solo goal he scored against the Hammers at Stamford Bridge in April. Anyway, onto Fabianski. Diop is right in this case; the Poland international was absolutely world class for West Ham this campaign. There was barely a more consistent ‘keeper in the top flight than the Hammers shot stopper. He proved to be a tremendous signing and is undoubtedly playing the best football of his career.
