West Ham United striker Toni Martinez is unlikely to secure a contract extension with the club and is set for a summer exit, according to journalist Sam Inkersole.

The 21-year-old is out of contract come the official end of the season [Source: Spotrac], and has done little to endear himself to the Hammers hierarchy.

Inkersole claimed in a Football London Q & A [15:45] that Martinez is way down the pecking order at the London Stadium and is unlikely to get a new deal as a result.

The Spaniard has made little impact during a succession of loan spells in his homeland over the past 18 months.

OPINION

The Toni Martinez experience just hasn’t gone how anyone at West Ham hoped. He arrived with a fair bit of fanfare back in the day, but he’s simply not been able to realise his potential. He’s never made a splash at first team level, while his record out on loan hasn’t been good either. He’s been farmed out to a series of lower league Spanish sides over the past couple of years, but has done little over there to suggest that he could make an impact at Premier League level. With that said, it’s probably time to let him go this summer. You have to consider, is Martinez really going to make the grade for the Hammers in the top flight? There’s very little to suggest that he could do. So at the moment he’s simply a drain on the club’s resources, and at time when West Ham are probably looking to trim their wage bill after a heavy summer of spending a year ago. So all signs seem to point to Martinez leaving this summer and Inkersole certainly seems confident that he’ll be off.
