COMMENTARY
West Ham may have lost to Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Monday but many Hammers supporters found a reason to be cheery. This is because some opted to focus on the display of defender Ryan Fredericks during the game, and couldn’t seem to believe how good he was. One highlighted the fact that the right-back made a “world class” block at one point to stop Chelsea extending their lead, while others focused on how good the right-back looked when pushing forward. In fact one Hammers fan pointed out that Fredericks was actually inadvertently embarrassing his own midfielders as he would pushed forward into good positions, only for the club’s midfielders to fail to capitalise on the opportunity the defender had given them. Given that Fredericks hasn’t consistently delivered the goods since arriving from Fulham in the summer, with injury not helping him settle, it was finally good to see the defender able to make a case for why Manuel Pellegrini must utilise him as much as possible.
