Sir Trevor Brooking remarked on West Ham’s spending power in the transfer market and pointed out the club didn’t have the money to buy enough talent to force their way into the Premier League’s top-six.

The Hammers legend made the remarks when reflecting on the importance of the club investing in the academy and it will surely see some Hammers fans given a reality check.

“We haven’t got the money or the budget to really buy enough talent to get, argue, a way into the top-six,” said Brooking in an interview with talkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams (as seen on the reporter’s Instagram account).

The Hammers showed lot of ambition in the summer by spending big and appointing Manuel Pellegrini as their manager, and some supporters no doubt thought this would serve their side well this season.

So well it could see them challenge around the top-six and while the Hammers can still finish seventh, they do face a tough battle even reaching that position in the Premier League this season.

Brooking’s remarks on the Hammers’ potential transfer budget compared to those in the top-six, show the disadvantage the Hammers have to make up to be able to compete with them.

While the Hammers spend of £94.82million (Source: Transfermarket) on incoming transfer this summer seems like a lot, it’s still below the level of money it’d take to catapult the club into the top-six.

With this in mind Brooking’s desire to point out how West Ham’s spending power compares to other Premier League sides, should act as a reality check for fans expectations for the coming seasons.
