West Ham are probably out of the race for seventh now, just about. Despite a top drawer performance against Manchester United on Saturday evening, the Hammers came away from Old Trafford empty handed, and even though Leicester City, Wolves and Everton all lost as well, you would think that with four games left, and with the gap at five points, the Irons might just have a tad too much to do to achieve European football this season. It doesn’t all have to be doom and gloom for the rest of the season though. Quite aside from the fact that the second half against Chelsea and yesterday’s outing against United were two of the brightest showings in a while, having nothing to play for now affords Manuel Pellegrini the opportunity to experiment a little with his squad going into the new season. We saw a glimpse of this yesterday, when young Nathan Holland was included on the bench, and there were many Hammers fans who felt that he maybe should have been given a run out. Holland, for his part, expressed his gratitude for being in the squad at all on Twitter after the match, and with little at stake in these last four matches, the hope will be that he can get his opportunity in the run in.
