West Ham United’s reported interest in Chelsea centre back Gary Cahill is unlikely to be genuine, according to Claret & Hugh.

The reliable Hammers news source claims that it’s as unlikely now as it was several months ago when these links first appeared that the club will make a move for the two-times Premier League winner.

The Daily Mirror claimed on Tuesday that Manuel Pellegrini’s side continue to hold an interest in the 33-year-old despite his difficulty in securing first team football at Stamford Bridge this season.

However, Claret & Hugh assert that Alaves stalwart Guillermo Maripan is the team’s main target at the position and has been scouted many times this campaign.

OPINION

The Cahill situation is an interesting one. He’s obviously been linked with the Hammers for a long time now and has shown himself in the past to be a top Premier League centre back. The question is, at 33 years of age, how much does he have left? He’s not had a kick at Chelsea this season as Maurizio Sarri has come in and consigned him to the scrapheap. West Ham are thought to be looking to reduce their wage bill this summer, making a big money move for a past-his-prime player like Cahill surely massively unlikely. That’s what Claret & Hugh seem to think, as well. Maripan is their number one defensive target by all accounts and rightfully so. He has excelled at Alaves this season and appears to have all the makings of someone who could thrive in English football. Obviously it’s always a gamble with players from abroad, but at this stage of their respective careers you’d have to say that a move for Maripan is worth the risk in comparison to a move for a veteran player like Cahill.
