OPINION

West Ham United right back Ryan Fredericks certainly didn’t have the easiest of outings during the first half of his team’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. The former Fulham man has struggled somewhat to impose himself at the club after his switch across London last summer, and that continued in the opening stanza here. He’s not a bad player and his pace makes him an asset against attackers like Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura. However, it’s no use being a pacy full back if you can’t actually defend, and that’s where Fredericks has really struggled throughout his Hammers tenure. We saw more signs of that on Saturday as he made hard work of the dangerous Tottenham attackers. As the half went on he started to get forward a bit more and have more of an impact offensively, but there’s no doubt that he’s not the most reassuring presence at the back.
