Gale: West Ham need consistency

Ex-West Ham favourite Tony Gale has hit out at his former club, suggesting that they lack consistency.

The Hammers lost 2-0 to Everton in a lacklustre display last Saturday that left them 11th in the table and five points adrift of that coveted seventh place.

And speaking on talkSPORT, as quoted by reputable source Claret & Hugh, Gale believes that their issues stem from an inflated belief in their abilities as a side.

He said: “They are so hit and miss.

“When Liverpool came to the London Stadium, they were clearly the better team. And then they go and lose to Cardiff, struggle against Huddersfield and you think ‘Oh my goodness, what’s going on here?’

“They just can’t get any consistency to their game. I think they are a team sometimes that don’t give the opposition a lot of respect and they go toe-to-toe with them.

“I think it needs to be looked at by the manager by saying that these players are not good enough to go toe-to-toe and we have to get some consistency in our team.”

OPINION

These are pretty strong comments from Gale, but you would have to say that they are entirely justified. The Hammers could, and probably should, be a lot higher in the table than they are, but they have developed a terrible habit of turning it on against the big sides and struggling against the smaller teams in the division. There is no way that this Hammers side should be getting beat off the Cardiff Citys of this world when they boast the squad that they do, and there’s certainly no excuse for the kind of lacklustre performance that saw them comprehensively outplayed on their own turf by Everton at the weekend. There is potential in this Irons side, but they will never realise it unless they are prepared to toughen up mentally and out to bed these lingering tendencies of dropping points against teams they should be tearing apart.
