Dean Ashton has voiced his concerns over his old side West Ham labelling this year a ‘bang average season’.

The ex Hammers forward was talking on the talkSPORT Jim White breakfast show (Wednesday, 10:30am) when he spoke about the lack of drive in the squad and the fact there is not enough consistency in the West Ham squad.

“It’s just been a bang average season” said Ashton. “That’s what’s disturbing for the fans because they have spent money.”

Fellow talkSPORT pundit Jim White agreed with the comments and Ashton went on to question the source of motivation for the London club behind the scenes.

“Who in that side is driving training every day? Who in that squad is making sure that standards are at there upmost? Is Pellegrini doing that or is it too easy at the club?,” he told talkSPORT.

OPINION

West Ham’s season has been a rollercoaster ride to say the least. The summer started with great additions in the transfer window, none better than Felipe Anderson arriving from Lazio. The negative from that period was the interest in Arnautovic which well and truly took his interest, fans started to go against their star man and his performances started to be impacted at the same time. Add the injuries to that of Yarmolenko, who had a stunning start to his Hammers career and it was a stumbling block to their momentum. Key moments have gone against Pellegrini’s men this season as-well, the off-side goal that denied them from a point against Liverpool, as-well as the goal that was wrongly disallowed against Leicester at the weekend that would have gave them all three points. Despite all of this, there is no disputing that West Ham should be reaching the European qualification spots with the squad at their disposal and the money they have spent. With that in mind, the season has to be put down as a disappointment for the Hammers fans.
