There is no doubting that West Ham United need to sign a centre-back in this summer’s transfer window. Manuel Pellegrini currently has three at his disposal, but signing one more would complete his puzzle.

Fabian Balbuena and Issa Diop have been fabulous in the centre of defence this season ever since they signed in the summer. Balbuena may have got injured, but that did not taint what a wonderful partnership they have.

Angelo Ogbonna took his place during his absence, with mixed reviews. He could not seem to decide the form he was going to be in from match to match, and this is simply was not good enough, or reliable either.

This is why it makes complete sense for the Hammers to reignite their pursuit of Gary Cahill from Chelsea this summer. The ex England international is not getting a look-in under Maurizio Sarri, so it makes complete sense for the Hammers to swoop for him.

The Irons were credited with an interest in the defender back in November according to the Daily Mail, and they must spark that interest yet again. Cahill is a player who should naturally wants more minutes under his belt, and playing at the London Stadium is the perfect way to achieve that.

The 6ft 4in [Transfermarkt] giant still has the quality to do well at a club like West Ham. He has proved for the Blues in the past how much talent he has, and his experience would no doubt be very invaluable to a team in the top ten of the Premier League.

The West Ham fans will surely be thrilled if the club plotted a swoop on their London rivals for Cahill, as he is just the player Manuel Pellegrini needs.
