West Ham United need to solve a few problem areas in the summer transfer window – that is an absolute given.

However, there is another problem that they will need to solve, and that problem comes in the shape of midfielder Jack Wilshere. Just what will they do with him in preparation for next season?

He has missed the majority of this campaign through injury and his chances of getting into the first team upon his return look very bleak indeed. Wilshere will not want to sit on the sidelines though, as the point of joining West Ham from Arsenal was to get more game time.

If this is the case, then the Hammers must sort out a loan exit for him in the summer. The Gunners have already tried this when they sent him out to Bournemouth a few seasons ago, and the minutes he clocked up did his confidence the world of good. Now this is something that the Irons must try for themselves.

Wilshere has never been able to fully unleash the talent that we all know he is capable of. The 27-year-old has shown glimpses of it in the past, but he has never been able to convince fans of this.

If he does not get loaned out this summer, then he is effectively pouring his career with West Ham down the drain. He needs to salvage what he has left of his career at the club, and going out on loan is the only way he is likely to achieve that.

The £100,000-a-week [Spotrac] player has all of the attributes needed to be a success at the London Stadium, there is no doubt about that. Joining another club for at least the first half of the season will allow him to hone it even further, and prove his fitness.

Manuel Pellegrini must make a bold decision and sanction a loan exit in the summer, otherwise his Hammers career could end up going down the drain.
