West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice was officially called up to his first England squad on Wednesday, per the Three Lions’ official Twitter account. The Hammers faithful were rightfully delighted for him, commenting that the call-up is well deserved. Indeed it is. The 20-year-old has been in exceptional form for Manuel Pellegrini’s side this season, bossing the centre of midfield on a regular basis. His ability and his youth make him a perfect fit for what England manager Gareth Southgate is looking for. The former Middlesbrough boss has always coveted young, talented players in his Three Lions set up, that’s why we’ve seen the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jadon Sancho given prominent roles recently. There will be players like Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse who will be disappointed to have missed out, but neither man had a stronger case than Rice for a call-up.
