Alan Shearer laid into Marko Arnautovic after witnessing the West Ham attacker throw his bottle on the floor during the 2-0 defeat to Everton on Saturday.

Kurt Zouma and Bernard heaped misery on the Hammers by sealing all three points for their side, but it was Arnautovic that particularly caught Shearer’s eye – and not for good reasons.

The BBC pundit slammed the first teamer for his attitude when he was taken off for Grady Diangana in the second half, aiming a dig at him about his aggression.

“I hope Arnautovic was showing anger at his performance by throwing the bottle on the floor rather than for coming off because that was as much aggression as he showed all afternoon,” he said on BBC One’s ‘Match of the Day‘ [30/3, 10.30pm].

OPINION

Shearer is not the first pundit to blast Arnautovic for his attitude on Saturday, and there is no doubt that he will not be the last. That being said, he is right to slam the striker for the way that he acted on the day. There was absolutely no need for him to show the aggression that he did when he came off, even if he was frustrated about his departure. Many players can get annoyed about being taken off, but they do not act in the way that he did. He hardly contributed anything towards the cause on Saturday, so why he was angry about being taken off remains to be seen. Shearer is right though, that aggression he showed was more than he displayed all afternoon. If he had put that energy into his performance, perhaps the result could have been a lot more different. After this, who knows whether he will stay in the team.
