A good defender can make a world of difference to a side’s fortunes, just ask Liverpool.

The Reds were perennial also rans for years, but it’s no coincidence that their recent upturn in fortunes has come about at the same time as their signing of Virgil van Dijk.

Admittedly, there are few sides capable of matching the eye watering sum they paid for the Dutchman, but that doesn’t mean that other clubs can’t follow their example in a more modest way.

Take West Ham, for instance. The Hammers have had another underwhelming season despite spending a shedload last summer, and a large part of their issues has come from the same defensive frailties that have haunted them for seasons.

Issa Diop looks like the real deal to be fair to him, but finding a decent partner capable of remaining injury free has proved to be a tougher task.

As such, you can understand why the Irons are reportedly looking at Alaves defender Guillermo Maripan.

According to Football.London, West Ham are very keen on the Chilean international, and the La Liga club have seemingly set their asking price.

Manager Abelardo Fernandez told Marca: “If a club wants Maripan, they must pay his release clause, which is set at £23 million.”

That may be a bit more than the Hammers were initially hoping to fork out on the 24-year-old, but it could still prove to be an absolute steal.

Maripan looks as if he could be another unearthed gem, and at the age he is now, he is just approaching his prime.

It may be a lot, but it could prove to be a savvy investment, and one that brings the team on no end.

The Hammers must act.
