Danny Mills has picked West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice to be in his Premier League team of the season so far.

The Sky Sports pundit has been impressed with what he has seen from the 20-year-old in this campaign, picking out attributes such as his passing ability, his energy to drive forward and his willingness to create chances for the team as the things that have wowed him the most.

He picked the Hammers star alongside Manchester United’s Paul Pogba and Manchester City’s Fernandinho.

“Another player, a young player in the headlines, who we have talked about already on this show, Declan Rice. I think he has really come into form,” he told Sky Sports [5:36].

“That energy that he’s got in that holding role, to get forward and create chances, passing ability.”

OPINION

It is safe to say that Mills has made absolutely the right choice with Rice here. Hardly no one knew who he was let alone know his name at the beginning of the season, but Manuel Pellegrini giving him a chance in the first team set up has arguably got him to where he is now. Like Mills pointed out, he is the player in the headlines, and that is for good reason. If you were to pick out one player who has been in the most consistent form this season, you without a doubt would go for Rice – even above players in the Premier League top-six. It is hard to pick out a time where he has put a foot wrong this term, and that is exactly what you need from a player. It is easy to forget that he is only 20 still, as the maturity he plays with is no doubt what has earned him a place in Mills’ team of the season so far.
