West Ham United striker Andy Carroll may end up training with the squad this summer despite the Hammers preparing to release him, according to Claret & Hugh.

The reliable Hammers news source claims that the club have decided not to offer the 30-year-old a new deal or to activate the extension option in his current contract.

However, he may continue to train with the squad this summer as an out of contract player in the reverse of Samir Nasri’s time at the London Stadium prior to his official signing in January.

Carroll is currently undergoing treatment at the club as a result of a fresh ankle injury, a setback which has essentially ended his career in East London.

OPINION

It’s unfortunate how Carroll’s time at West Ham has gone but it’s best that everyone moves on in the summer. He hasn’t been able to stay consistently fit or to find real form this season and that’s seen his chances of earning a new deal go up in smoke. However, the club look set to do the honourable thing and allow him to stay about the place in the summer while he maintains his fitness in the hope of earning a contract somewhere else. We see clubs do this a lot, letting an experienced professional or a player who lives locally train with their squad while they keep their fitness up. It’s nice of West Ham to do the same for Carroll despite the colossal waste of money he has been for them. Hopefully he is able to get back to full fitness and earn a deal somewhere else, because he remains a useful player when he’s fully firing. That’s just not happened enough for the Hammers over the years.
