OPINION
You almost have to feel sorry for Andy Carroll. The big Geordie striker barley gets a look in at West Ham, and then when Manuel Pellegrini does have change of heart and decides to throw him a bone, he does so against Manchester City. It’s almost cruel. Carroll was never going to prosper against such a resolute defence from the champions, and his style of play was always going to set him up to fail at the Etihad. Ultimately, the Hammers were always going to struggle against Pep Guardiola’s side, and their best hope of escaping some of the barrage of pressure was to hoof the ball up field in the hope that their target man could get on the end of it. That would have worked fine if they could guarantee that every ball was going to be inch perfect and on a plate for the 30-year-old, but as soon as he is required to anything that resembles running, he struggles hugely. As such, the forward essentially blunted the Hammers’ only escape route and allowed City to indulge in a deluge of pressure for the outset. Carroll can only take so much blame for his shortcomings, however, and Pellegrini.

I get the squad rotation thing but why did he have to stop rotating when he got to Carroll.
