West Ham could make a real statement of their European credentials by making a shock loan move for James Rodriguez this January.

The Colombian star is currently on loan at Bayern Munich from Real Madrid, with the German club having the option to buy him at the end of his spell for £39.5 million.

Rodriguez has fallen out of favour with the Bundesliga champions, however, and is a loan target for Arsenal, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The report suggests that any deal to bring the 27-year-old to England would hinge on the Gunners paying the remainder of his loan fee to Real – a sum believed to be around £3 million.

If the rumours are true, then West Ham must not hesitate to step in and snap up the two time Champions League winner for the rest of the season.

The Hammers are on the cusp of securing European football under Manuel Pellegrini, and could really make a statement of their intent by signing a player of Rodriguez’s profile.

He may have struggled for form in recent years, but the man who cost Real £71 million in 2014, as reported by the BBC, would surely flourish in a side where he was the star turn.

Rodriguez won the golden boot at the 2014 World Cup, and could bring that Midas touch to the London Stadium in a bargain piece of business.
