South American football expert Tim Vickery has delivered his verdict on West Ham target Maxi Gomez, suggesting that the player would be a great fit for the Premier League.

The Uruguayan international has been heavily linked with a £44 million move to the London Stadium, as reported by the Express.

Writing in a column for the Sun, Vickery claimed that Gomez, who is also a target for Barcelona, was an impressive prospect.

He said: “Gomez is a 22-year-old striker who might have stepped out of the pages of a 1950s football annual. Nicknamed ‘The Bull’, he is awesomely powerful, a kind of Nat Lofthouse figure who looks like he has recently emerged from the mineshaft.

“And in his old fashioned, uncomplicated manner, Gomez is technically gifted as well – perhaps a little over-reliant on his right foot, but versatile enough to drop deep and link the play, and a fearsome sight when breaking into the penalty area.”

OPINION

Gomez certainly sounds like the real deal, and Vickery’s endorsement is a ringing one. The striker is a brutish handful, but is able to play a bit as well, and when you find those to qualities in a forward you should pounce immediately. Judging by Vickery’s description, he is readymade for the Premier League, and Hammers fans will be licking their lips at the prospect of bringing him to England. A lot will depend, however, on Marko Arnautovic’s future, and with the Austrian looking increasingly likely to stick around until at least the summer, it could be a while before the Irons are in a position to make a serious move. Given the reported interest in Gomez, they may not have that long, and they will be very aware that other clubs are beginning to circle for a player who has all the attributes needed to make a real success of himself wherever he ends up.
