West Ham United will not be signing Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi due to his high wage demands, according to Claret and Hugh.

The website – who is a reliable source of news on the Hammers – reported that the club had baulked at the £170,000-a-week demands made by the 25-year-old target, and as a result, pulled out of a move in this transfer window.

The report adds that the attacker – who is on loan at La Liga side Valencia – was not keen on a switch to the East London outfit anyway, and said that Chelsea were wanting a £2 million fee in order to sign him on loan, as well as £1 million required for the player’s agent to negotiate the potential deal.

OPINION

No wonder West Ham turned their attention away from Batshuayi – these demands are rather extortionate! The player has hardly set the league alight since joining so it remains to be seen why he was asking for such a high wage given that he is hardly the most prolific of players anyway. However, the fact that he had made it clear that he did not want to join West Ham in the first place should have been the initial warning signs. Signing a player whose heart is not really in it is not the best idea, so they should be counting their lucky stars that they avoided a deal when they did. What makes him so much better than the likes of Marko Arnautovic that makes him think he should be paid more? It sounds like a player with an inflated ego, or a player who has an agent who has been whispering too much in his ear. He would need to justify that type of wage with his performances, which based on the last few seasons, is not much to witness anyway.
