It was made abundantly clear on Saturday in West Ham United’s 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth that Andy Carroll is past his sell by date in East London.

The 6ft 3in Englishman [Source: Transfermarkt] was absolutely woeful at the Vitality Stadium, failing to have any impact on the game and producing one of the misses of the season.

It will have come as a pleasant surprise for West Ham fans, then, to read on Monday that their Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in the former Liverpool man.

The Sun claims that the 30-year-old is a shock contender to solve Spurs’ striking crisis, and that a £2million move across London could be on the cards.

The deal is said to hinge on whether Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini feels that he needs Carroll as cover for disgruntled attacker Marko Arnautovic. However, the Chilean has the likes of Javier Hernandez, Lucas Perez and young Xande Silva as back ups for the Austrian, meaning that Carroll should be surplus to requirements.

With the player out of contract in the summer and woefully out of form the club should bite Spurs’ hand off if they do make a £2million bid. Carroll needs to be moved on anyway, why not make some money while you can?

It was clear on Saturday that Carroll simply isn’t suited to this West Ham team anymore. He is too slow, not clever enough in his movement and doesn’t link up well enough with his team mates.

Pellegrini needs a technical, more agile frontman to make the most out of the creative instincts of Felipe Anderson and Samir Nasri. Carroll, on the other hand, is an old school striker who relies on crosses from wide areas.

So with the Englishman being out of contract in the summer and unsuited to this Hammers team, it would be madness to turn down Tottenham’s approach.

Pellegrini is being handed a surprising solution to a frustrating problem – he must grasp it with both hands.
