West Ham United are interested in a deal for Sunderland striker Josh Maja, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper report in their live transfer blog [19/01, 17:58] that the Black Cats may attempt to sell the 20-year-old and get him back on a loan until the end of the season amid a stalemate in contract talks.

The Mirror claim that West Ham are among the clubs interested in a bargain deal for the young striker, who has scored 15 goals so far this season for the League One side.

OPINION

Lewisham-born Maja has been the shining light for Sunderland this season under Jack Ross as they seek promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking. The 20-year-old has been on fire in front of goal for the Black Cats, with his tally of 15 putting them in a strong position to achieve that goal at the end of the season. Obviously his form has now begun to attract the attention of some of the country’s biggest clubs, and his contract impasse with Sunderland is drawing even more attention to the youngster. Maja has reportedly been offered £6,000-a-week, but that has been rejected, and it is now looking likely that he will end up at another club soon enough. Sunderland have obviously accepted that, but still want to retain him for the season in an understandable move. West Ham would do very well to win the race for Maja, with several other Premier League sides also in the hunt.
