West Ham United do not have much interest in signing Sunderland striker Josh Maja, according to Claret and Hugh.

The website – who are a reliable source of information on the Hammers – report that despite previous reports [Sunderland Echo] linking the club with a move for the 16-goal hitman, the club have little interest in swooping for his services.

The report adds that they are in the hunt for a forward – preferably from the Premier League – who is capable of making the step up to the first team instantly.

OPINION

Despite the fact that Maja has scored 16 goals this season – an impressive tally no matter what league you are in – it is no surprise that West Ham actually have little interest in signing him. His record may suggest that he is prolific in front of goal, but seeing as he is playing in League One, the likelihood of him being able to make the step up two divisions into West Ham’s first team is very slim. The Irons would be making a huge risk if they snapped up his services this month, especially as he is not proven at the highest level yet. He needs to move to a Championship club before he makes a go of it in the Premier League, as there is the risk that he may flop by moving there this month. There is no denying the talent that the attacker has, but he is just not ready to make the move to West Ham just yet. They need a proven striker who has plenty of experience at a high level, not one who is making waves in the third tier.
