Former West Ham United player Jack Collison has suggested it would be wise for the club to sell striker Andy Carroll.

The 30-year-old is not getting much game time at the London Stadium due to boss Manuel Pellegrini preferring other forwards over Carroll, something which Collison names as the number one reason why the Hammers should offload him.

He adds that the fringe figure – who has played 12 games in all competitions for the Irons this term – still has the ability to do well, and that he should make a switch in order to demonstrate how effective he can actually be.

“It’s getting to that time with Andy Carroll. He’s fit, he’s desperate to play games and he’s not getting many minutes,” he told Sky Sports.

“So, for him, especially with the players West Ham are getting linked with at the moment, it could be an opportunity for him to go out and get some football somewhere because he brings a lot to the table.

“He’s effective and he’s totally different to a lot of strikers. It might be the right time for Andy to go and play some football and show everybody how good he is.”

OPINION

Collison is absolutely spot on here – it is about time that Carroll was sold. Like he said, he still has the ability to be effective and show everybody just how good he still is. While he has not been able to demontrate that at West Ham – injury has hampered his progress – there is no reason why he could not achieve that elsewhere. He needs to prove just how good he can be if given more first team opportunities, and that is only going to happen if he moves to another club. The Hammers would be wise to cash in on him seeing as he is of no use to them at the moment, but it remains to be seen what will happen with him. Will he be sold today, or will the Irons wait until the summer to offload him? With Marko Arnautovic now back in the fold after the whole furore that surrounded his future, the likelihood of Carroll playing have got even slimmer.
