West Ham United have reportedly failed with a £20million move for Barcelona playmaker Denis Suarez, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claims that despite offering the transfer fee that the Spanish champions were looking for, the player himself has rejected the move.

That is because the 25-year-old, who has one cap for Spain under his belt, is said to be dead set on a reunion in London with Arsenal manager Unai Emery, who he previously worked under during a loan spell at Sevilla.

However, his mooted loan move to the Emirates Stadium might be scuppered by the Hammers’ bid for the player.

OPINION

This is disappointing news for West Ham, there’s no way around that. Suarez is an unbelievably talented player and he would have been a big hit at the London Stadium, but when emotional ties are involved in a move there’s not much you can do. The player obviously wants to work under Emery again and so he rejected the West Ham switch. It’s shows how ambitious the club are, though, that these are the sorts of players that the Hammers are targeting. Clearly everyone involved wants to move West Ham forward and they’re trying to recruit the best possible talent to make that happen. It hasn’t worked out on this occasion but it shows that everyone is pulling in the right direction both on and off the field. Hopefully the club continues targeting this calibre of player as West Ham look to push on up the table under Manuel Pellegrini.
