West Ham must reignite their reported summer pursuit of FC Porto midfielder Hector Herrera as he could be the ideal player to help Manuel Pellegrini continuing to guide the club to a brighter future.

In June, Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha shared that the Hammers were showing signs that they may bid for the 28-year-old central midfielder due to his contract ending in summer 2019.

Roll on the clock and Herrera’s contract issues still aren’t sorted and the Premier League side could still do with midfielder just like him.

According to the Daily Mirror, the 28-year-old’s exit from Porto is inevitable as he has rejected three contracts offers and even has confessed his future may lie away from the Portuguese giants.

Herrera, who has 70 caps for Mexico, is a sublime passer of the ball and could easily make a difference in the Hammers’ current midfield as Manuel Pellegrini is clearly short of a midfielder of two ahead of the window opening.

Also with time running out on his contract, not only could the Hammers get him in the summer for free, due to needing him as soon as possible they could probably get him for a bargain price in January as Porto would no doubt rather get a fee for him then nothing at all.

Aside from being a neat passer of the ball and a strong tackler, Herrera’s Champions League experience could prove useful in helping the Hammers continuing to progress as a club in the coming season.

The 28-year-old has played a pivotal part in helping Porto progress to the tournament’s knockout stages this season and there’s no reason his arrival could start to see the Hammers pushing for a place to feature in an European competition themselves.

Therefore Pellegrini must urge his club to reignite their pursuit of Herrera in January as his exit from Porto is looking inevitable as it stands.
