West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that midfielder Jack Wilshere has suffered yet another injury.

The former Arsenal man has only recently returned from a previous setback, however Pellegrini has confirmed that he missed Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Cardiff City with another knock.

“Jack has a small pain in his ankle, not the one he injured before,” the Chilean told Sky Sports following the victory at the London Stadium.

The news will exasperate Hammers fans who are yet to see the best of the Englishman since his summer move across London.

OPINION

This is exactly the sort of scenario that West Ham supporters will have feared when the club signed Wilshere this off season. The 26-year-old has a worrying injury record, that much cannot be denied, and so it was a gamble for the Hammers to bring him in this summer. This isn’t what anyone wanted. Wilshere is undoubtedly talented any always has been, but he needs a full season of uninterrupted football for him to get back to his best. That’s obviously not going to happen now this campaign, but the best he can do is remain fully fit for the rest of the season. It will be hugely frustrating for him, as well, to return from an ankle injury against Newcastle on Saturday just to injure the other ankle in training this week. It almost beggars belief. Hopefully this is just a minor setback and he can return to the starting lineup – and (hopefully) top form – before too long.
