West Ham United are interested in a January swoop for Cardiff City defender Sol Bamba, according to Calciomercato.

The Italian outlet report that the 6’3″ giant [Transfermarkt] has attracted the attention of the Hammers, as well as Newcastle United and Fulham ahead of the upcoming market.

Calciomercato claim that West Ham may end up losing centre-back Issa Diop in January, with Bamba a potential replacement for the red-hot 21-year-old who only arrived in the summer from Toulouse.

OPINION

This is an interesting report to say the least. Bamba has no doubt played well for Cardiff this season, with the Ivory Coast international marshalling the Bluebirds defence admirably in their first term back in the Premier League. There is no doubt that Bamba has the ability to play at a higher level than Cardiff, but the main questions here relate to the possibility of that happening. Quite frankly, the likelihood of West Ham swooping in January for a 33-year-old centre-back is low. The Irons are relatively well-stocked in that department, and have other priorities in the upcoming market. Secondly, there is the claim regarding Diop. Obviously the 21-year-old has impressed massively for the club since his summer move, but the suggestion that he will then be sold after six months is pretty ridiculous. Unless someone like PSG were to come in with a £50million+ bid, then there is zero chance of that happening. All in all, not much to write home about for West Ham fans in this one.
