Italian heavyweights Roma are the latest team to enter the race for West Ham United attacker Marko Arnautovic, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Italian outlet claims that Eusebio Di Francesco’s side are considering the 29-year-old, and that the player is seeking a new experience.

They also state that the Austrian international would be open to moving back to Italy, where he had a spell with Inter Milan earlier in his career.

The Telegraph reported last month that Manchester United had expressed an interest in the Hammers star, but Jose Mourinho’s team will seemingly now face competition from the continent.

OPINION

This is an interesting one. Roma have kind of come out of the blue as a potential suitor for Arnautovic. However, it would make sense in a strange way. He flamed out at Inter and would likely enjoy the chance to prove people in Italy wrong about him, while it would give him break from the hustle and bustle of the Premier League in the latter stage of his career. He has seemed pretty discontented in recent weeks as the speculation over his future increases, and perhaps a move abroad would appeal to him. Having said that, Roma are not on the same level as a club like United, meaning that if the Red Devils’ interest is genuine the player would likely rebuff Roma’s interest in favour of a move to Old Trafford. However, if the Hammers can use the deal to negotiate the signing of Roma frontman Edin Dzeko, who Calcio Mercato reported they were interested in in October, then it could end up being something worth doing for the club.
