Legendary commentator John Motson heaped praise on West Ham attacker Felipe Anderson for his performance during the 4-2 win over Burnley.

The 73-year-old, who was doing commentary of the game for talkSPORT 2 on Saturday, shared that he thought the 25-year-old Hammers winger almost took over the game, which he reckons will go down as one of the matches of the season.

Motson also revealed that Hammers legend Alvin Martin feared the London Stadium’s mood changing, as it was previously rocking, once Manuel Pellegrini’s side lost their lead for the second time during the match.

“Had it not been for the obvious attention on Cardiff City v Leicester, we all know about that and still things we ought to say about that and players going to Thailand and so on, but had it not been for the Leicester game and amount of attention on it for obvious reasons; West Ham v Burnley was probably one of the games of the season,” said Motson on talkSPORT (Monday November 5, 14:40).

“It really was, the London Stadium was rocking when it got to 2-2, Alvin Martin, my co-commentator, said to me this is where they get nervous here, the mood in the crowd will now change cause West Ham had lost the lead twice and we thought here we go.

“And then of course Felipe Anderson came along and took the game over almost, others played very well also, and the game ended on a huge high.

“They were given a standing ovation the Hammers.”

OPINION

Martin was probably right to fear the London Stadium turning a little hostile as it looked like a typical case of the Hammers dropping the ball once Burnley made it 2-2 in the match. Pellegrini’s side dominated the match on Saturday and it was bewildering that Sean Dyche’s side stayed in the contest for so long. However Hammers fans kept the faith, as they knew they were witnessing a good performance, and this helped their side get an important victory over the line. As for Motson’s decision to highlight Anderson above other players, it’s easy to see why he did that. The winger submitted his best performance in a Hammers shirt yet and it came on the back of two dismal outings for the Brazilian. Anderson really stepped up for his side and took the game by the scruff of the neck and hopefully he will be able to keep delivering the goods. The summer recruit clearly is a wonderful talent but has been inconsistent in his first few outings for the London club.
