Gary Lineker cheekily referenced long jumper Greg Rutherford winning the gold medal at the London Stadium in order to highlight West Ham’s woes during the defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.

The Match of the Day host claimed that Leroy Sane’s goal to make it 4-0 to Man City during his side clash with the Hammers saw two of Manuel Pellegrini’s players leap just as far as the Olympian did to take home the gold.

“Crikey…. play some football. 3 up at already,” tweeted Lineker on his personal Twitter account.

“Sané just scored after a dummy that saw 2 of Hammers’ finest leap as far as anyone at the London stadium since won gold.”

OPINION

Lineker made a cheeky reference to the London Stadium’s pass life in order to mock two of the Hammers players and it was a clever remark by all accounts. However if you’re a West Ham fan it no doubt wouldn’t have been able to cheer you up after a miserable day at the office for your side. Manchester City cruised to a 3-0 victory and the Hammers never looked like being able to deny them getting all three points. While Pellegrini’s side had chances to score during the game, which weren’t taken, the Hammers look like they could be easily exposed at the back. The only positive that can be said, is that no one was expecting the London club to have it easy against Man City as Pep Guardiola’s side have been in amazing form all season. The Hammers really need to quickly get over this potentially demoralising defeat and get back to performing like they are capable of.
