West Ham United insider ExWHUemployee has claimed that the Hammers’ reported move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama is unlikely to happen.

Football Insider reported recently that Manuel Pellegrini’s side are interested in bringing the Kenyan, who is on a reported £70,000-per-week [Source], across London, however ExWHUemployee has now poured cold water on their hopes of signing the 27-year-old.

“Wanyama, the Spurs midfielder, has been linked with us,” he said on The West Ham Way Podcast [06/11; 46:00]. “We’ve been linked with him and, actually, one website is talking about us doing a swap deal for [Declan] Rice with him.

“Obviously West Ham wouldn’t approve of that. I think his agent is an agent who is the same agent, possibly, of Rice and maybe [Jack] Wilshere so we’ve got links to his agent. I don’t think it’s a move that is likely to happen at this point, but if it did happen it’s not something I’d be shocked by because there are strong links.”

OPINION

This is a bit of a blow for West Ham fans. Wanyama is exactly the sort of player that the Hammers need in a position where they require some help at this moment in time. Carlos Sanchez and Jack Wilshere are both injured while captain Mark Noble is suspended, leaving Pellegrini with just Declan Rice and Pedro Obiang as central midfielders. So help is needed and Wanyama would certainly be capable of giving them that. The Kenyan international is a top class defensive midfielder who has struggled with injury problems of late and has fallen down Mauricio Pochettino’s pecking order as a result. The emergence of Harry Winks, also, hasn’t helped the former Southampton man. This would be a nice signing for West Ham but obviously ExWHUemployee has thrown doubt over the move now. This is just one man’s opinion, of course, so the door isn’t closed on Wanyama moving to the London Stadium, but maybe supporters should temper their expectations just a little.
