Stuart Pearce shared some words of wisdom for West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice over where his international future lies.

The 19-year-old has played three times for the Republic of Ireland senior side, whilst also representing the country at every level from under-16s – but he now faces a dilemma on whether he will play for England.

Pearce has weighed in on the debate facing the Hammers first teamer, saying that he must “go with his heart” in whatever he chooses to do – and he also drooled over the ace, labelling him as a “very big talent”.

“It’s totally down to him, wherever his heart lies. But I do think more clarity is needed on the international stage. I don’t think players should be able to change allegiance after declaring for a nation at any level,” he said, as quoted by the Mirror.

“He’s a very big talent. I’m pleased with the way he has fought his way back into the side. It was a pleasure to work with him. He is one of those players who will continually improve himself.”

OPINION

This is a debate that has been rumbling on for a while, and it remains to be seen when it will actually come to an end. Like Pearce said, Rice should go with his heart in whatever he decides to do – whether that be playing for Ireland or England. However, even though it is a massive decision for him to make, he must make it soon to end all of this debate. But, if he decides to go with Ireland after all this time, it is unlikely that he is going to be welcomed with open arms by his teammates and the fans. He is the one who has put himself in this crunch situation, as it has been so long since he considered changing allegiance. England would gladly make him a welcome addition amongst their ranks – especially as their lack of defensive midfielders is as clear as day.
