Many West Ham supporters on social media destroyed Aaron Cresswell for his performance against Tottenham on Saturday after their side lost 1-0.

The 28-year-old was handed a rare opportunity to start after only appearing in the Premier League once this season ahead of the clash against Spurs, and a large section of fans weren’t impressed.

One Hammers fan tweeted that they’d rather stick pins in their eyes then watch Cresswell attempt to play football, while another suggested that the left-back was giving him headaches.

OPINION

Cresswell may have messed up his chance to stake a first-team claim on Saturday as he struggled in Saturday’s clash. The 28-year-old really needs to have a long hard look in the mirror following that display as if he wants a future at the London Stadium, his displays need to improve sharply. Cresswell is unlikely to be offered another chance to feature in the Premier League soon but with his side still in the League Cup, that’s when he might get a chance to impress. It’s hard to disagree with several fans who tweeted that Cresswell wasn’t an upgrade on first-choice left-back Arthur Masuaku as both seem to struggle with the defensive side of the game, despite being defenders. It seems Manuel Pellegrini is going to have to buy a new left-back in January and if that isn’t causing Cresswell to sweat about his future at the club, then nothing will. It’s a shame to see a loyal servant like Cresswell struggle, but times have changed.
