West Ham United are set to offer Roma striker Edin Dzeko a route back to the Premier League and are ready to meet his wage demands, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Italian publication reports that Manuel Pellegrini is keen to reunite with Dzeko after their time together at Manchester City, and that he is readying a £22million bid as they sit in the driving seat for his capture, with the Hammers also said to be willing to met Dzeko’s £3.5million-per-year salary demands, something that his current club are not prepared to do.

In an unusual move, West Ham will attempt to sweeten the deal by offering the 32-year-old, who has a Premier League winner’s medal to his name, a sporting director position once his playing days are over.

OPINION

What a signing this would be for the Hammers. Dzeko is getting on a bit now, but he is still scoring at an unbelievable rate in an incredibly difficult league. The Bosnia & Herzegovina international knows both the Premier League and West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini incredibly well so it shouldn’t be difficult for him reacclimatise to life in England. Marko Arnautovic has been flourishing in a centre forward role this season but the Austrian cannot hope to offer the prolificness of Dzeko, while strikers Javier Hernandez and Andy Carroll have failed to emerge as reliable options for Pellegrini. There aren’t many areas of the Hammers squad that need improving, but centre forward is one of them. Dzeko would offer the club a world class frontman for a relatively minuscule outlay, as well as a potential sporting director once his playing days are over. It’s a win-win for everyone and the club should be looking to get it done as soon as possible.
