West Ham midfielder Carlos Sanchez has undergone surgery on a knee injury that will keep him out for five to six months, according to reliable journalist Sam Inkersole.

The Football London reporter revealed via his personal Twitter account that the Hammers’ summer signing suffered the injury in a Carabao Cup clash with Macclesfield Town a month ago.

It is understood that the 32-year-old senior player has since jetted out to Barcelona for surgery and could be out of action up until April 2019.

This news will no doubt be a huge blow to Manuel Pellegrini and the rest of the team. Even though Sanchez has not made many appearances in a West Ham shirt, his presence will no doubt be missed on the pitch. The enforcer provided the depth needed in the central midfield, but Pellegrini will now have to find ways to cope without him. He is the second summer signing who will now be sidelined for an extended period of time after Andriy Yarmolenko was ruled out for a while – a scenario that he would never have wished for. However, many will question why it took so long to get Sanchez into surgery and on the road to recovery. It has taken West Ham a month to get the ball rolling, which is rather bizarre – Sanchez could have returned a lot sooner if they took action straight away. Fingers crossed that Pellegrini does not have any more long-term casualties to add to his ongoing crisis.
