Former West Ham striker Jermain Defoe has been in contact with the club over a stunning return in January, according to Football Insider

The reliable news site report that the 36-year-old England international is keen on coming back to the club where he spent five years in his early career.

Football Insider claim that the Bournemouth ace has already picked up the phone and spoken to the Hammers about that happening in the upcoming window.

It is said that the club harbour worries over the fitness of striking trio Marko Arnautovic, Andy Carroll and Javier Hernandez, while they are concerned about Lucas Perez’s lack of form since his £4million switch from Arsenal.

OPINION

This is certainly an interesting twist for the Hammers ahead of the January transfer window, with Defoe obviously keen on a return to the club where he first really made his name in English football. The England ace has really struggled for game time at the Vitality Stadium this season, being handed just two starts in the EFL Cup and two substitute appearances in the Premier League. At this stage of his career Defoe is obviously keen to be playing as much as possible, and with players like Callum Wilson and Joshua King ahead of him in the pecking order, that is unlikely to happen at Bournemouth. He is likely aware of the Hammers’ issues up front, and obviously believes he could add something in that position for his former club. A return for Defoe would likely split opinion among the Irons faithful, with some probably excited at the possibility of seeing the goal machine back, while others will not have forgotten his two spells at bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
