West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini will aim to solve his problem position of left back once the January transfer window opens, according to Claret & Hugh.

The respected Hammers insider claims that the Chilean is looking to resolve the position, with the issue creeping up his agenda as the winter transfer window approaches.

Arthur Masuaku has emerged as the first choice left back under Pellegrini, with previous incumbent Aaron Cresswell having to watch on from the sidelines.

However, neither man is thought to be considered the long term solution at the London Stadium, and Pellegrini will look to find a new first choice star come January.

OPINION

This makes absolute sense. West Ham have struggled to find the answer at left back this term, which has come in stark contrast to their strength in depth on the other side of the pitch. Pablo Zabaleta has excelled in recent weeks, while summer signing Ryan Fredericks continues to keep the pressure on the veteran. Left back, on the other hand, has been a thorn in the manager’s side throughout his time at the club. Masuaku is clearly his preferred choice at the moment but the Frenchman is suspect defensively. Cresswell, meanwhile, does not seem to have Pellegrini’s trust and his days in East London appear to be numbered. It’s slightly strange that the former Manchester City boss didn’t address the position this summer, considering Masuaku’s shortcomings have been clear for some time. However, he needs to improve the position once the January transfer window opens, and he will surely do so.
