West Ham United’s woeful start to the Premier League season has undoubtedly involved a lot of finger pointing and wondering who to blame.

Boss Manuel Pellegrini and his players should be taking the stick for their torrid start, but the Chilean has claimed that it is down to “continuing problems from last season.”

BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton has taken issue with these comments, and claims that Pellegrini should be the one to take responsibility for the way his team have begun their top-flight season.

“It’s David Moyes bashing season again. I think that is unnecessary and [Pellegrini] needs to take responsibility himself,” he said on BBC Five Live Sport.

“I think the centre-half issue is a big issue, they got [Fabian] Balbuena in, and [Issa] Diop – and I think that will take time to evolve. The manager needs to step up and take responsibility this season, and not look back at last season.”

Pellegrini must heed Sutton’s advice, as what has gone on this season is ultimately his responsibility.

Blaming the team’s poor results on problems that evolved last season under Moyes is not the way to go about justifying why they have not lived up to expectations.

As an experienced manager, he should know better than to put the blame on his predecessor.

Their woeful start to the 2018/19 campaign is down to the decisions that he has made, but the fact he had new players come into the squad should have made his job a lot easier.

The way he is going, Pellegrini is asking to be sacked, and he must take the responsibility for everything before it is too late.

As Sutton remarks on BBC Five Live Sport, Pellegrini had eight new players start in the first team, so it is not like he can blame their problems on last season.

If he wants to be taken seriously, then he must change his attitude imminently.
