Graeme Souness delivered his verdict on the progress West Ham had made this season following their 0-0 draw with Chelsea.

The Sky Sports pundit shared that the Hammers now looked like a proper team as they were well organised and seemed able to dig out results against opponents who will dominate possession against them.

Souness also name dropped Hammers teenager Declan Rice when delivering his verdict in order to allude that his defensive-minded nature was aiding the club’s midfield.

“I heard someone say in midweek, might be Tony Gale, he’s (Declan Rice) is the best centre-half they’ve got at the club and they play him in midfield,” said Souness on Sky Sports Premier League (15:35 September 23).

“He’ll has a defensive head on him and I thought today, it’s not all about being on the ball in that position, large part of it is just filling spaces where the danger is and I thought West Ham looked like a real proper team today.

“They looked like a team who could dig results out and it was Chelsea they were playing, maybe Chelsea were half a yard off the mark but they still had a big job to do.

“And it’s all about when your playing a team with lots and lots of possession, you don’t fall asleep at any given time and they loaded up the midfield and they shuffled across when the ball kept continually getting switched.

” I thought today they looked like a well organised, well oiled machine West Ham.”

OPINION

Souness is very positive about the Hammers following their 0-0 draw with Chelsea and supporters of Manuel Pellegrini’s side should be excited by his comments. The Hammers haven’t looked defensively strong for a while, particularly at the start of this season and in their 2017/18 campaign, so it’s nice to see that Pellegrini has already been able to improve the club in one aspect. While the 0-0 draw with the Blues wasn’t the best advertisement for football on Sunday as both side’s weren’t able to create themselves tons of chances, it was a valuable point for the Hammers to pick up. The Hammers ended their losing streak against Everton last weekend by beating them 3-1 at Goodison Park and now have ended their run of losses at the London Stadium by being the first team to cause Chelsea to drop points this season. Hopefully the 0-0 draw can be built on by Pellegrini and the next game sees the Hammers able to showcase their attacking talents a little more.
