Former West Ham manager David Moyes shared that he had decided to stay at the club at the end of last season if the owners provided him with funds to strengthen the squad.

The 55-year-old shared that he believes he couldn’t have done a better job while in control of the Hammers and that he was disappointed not to be offered the chance to stay.

However Moyes went on to reveal that while he had decided that he wanted to extend his time at the London Stadium, he only wanted to do that if transfer funds were provided.

“I have to say we couldn’t have done a better job,” said Moyes in an interview with The Sun.

“That’s why I was disappointed not to be offered the opportunity to stay. I’d taken it to the end of the season to see how I did and how the owners felt.

“From where they were to get them living and breathing again, was probably as successful a season as I could have had.

“By the end I’d decided I wanted to stay if the owners provided me with the funds to strengthen the squad.

“It disappointed me I didn’t at least get a chance to talk about it.”

OPINION

Moyes has delivered his verdict on his time at the Hammers and is kind of patting himself on the back in the process. While some may be clambering for the Scottish manager to return after Manuel Pellegrini’s awful start to life at the London Stadium, his comments prove he wouldn’t do any better. If Moyes believes he couldn’t have done a better job then it’s worrying the standards he sets for himself. The experienced boss did save the Hammers from relegation and everyone should be grateful for that. However his style of football was still painful to watch and he didn’t really take games by the scruff of the neck even once Premier League survival was guaranteed. Moyes’ remarks imply that his cautious style was still right in his eyes, even when relegation wasn’t a possibility, and that’s good enough for a club like West Ham. It’s interesting that the Scottish boss shared he wanted to stay only to add a condition to statement. Granted the Hammers board opted to hand Pellegrini a lucrative transfer budget in the summer and you wonder if Moyes is a little jealous given what a tough job he had getting them to spend big in January.
