A number of West Ham United supporters have been reacting on social media to the news report that Jack Wilshere will miss around six weeks after ankle surgery.

The central midfielder, who has 34 England caps under his belt, underwent surgery on the ankle he twisted in training last week, which caused him to miss the 3-1 win over Everton on Sunday.

The majority of Hammers fans have appeared rather less than shocked by the news, with Wilshere’s injury history making this situation feel inevitable, and some were left expressing that they had already had enough of him, with Pedro Obiang and Declan Rice named as his preferred replacements.

OPINION

The reaction of West Ham fans is entirely understandable. Wilshere, for some reason, was handed a three year contract this summer, and this injury just makes that seem ill advised. The Hammers were aware of his history before signing him, so wouldn’t a one year deal have made more sense? Obviously a six week injury isn’t the worst thing in the world, it just doesn’t make the West Ham decision makers look good that this has occurred so soon after Wilshere signed. The 34-cap England international is a talented player, but he’s yet to show that at the London Stadium. From that point of view you can see why the supporters are already turning their attention to the likes of Declan Rice and Pedro Obiang in central midfield. A Wilshere injury simply felt inevitable from the moment he signed, and it’s clear that Hammers fans felt the same. We’ll have to wait and see how he looks on his return from injury in six weeks time.
