West Ham United striker Javier Hernandez is set to return to training later this week after recovering from illness, according to Claret and Hugh.

The club insider – who are a reliable source of news on the Hammers – have reported that the 30-year-old forward has recovered from a bout of glandular fever and is set to make an immediate return to the training set up.

Hernandez is said to have become ill a few weeks ago, but Claret and Hugh report that he is now free of the fever, although they claim that the matches against Macclesfield Town in the League Cup and Manchester United will come too soon for him.

Nevertheless, the 5ft 9in [Transfermarkt] ace could return to action when the Irons take on Brighton and Hove Albion on 5th October.

OPINION

This latest update on Hernandez will undoubtedly be a major boost for boss Manuel Pellegrini, who has had to resort to having summer signing Lucas Perez as cover for Marko Arnautovic. Perez has not really proved himself in the Premier League yet, and his cameo against Chelsea on Sunday did not really help his case in the slightest. Hernandez will provide better cover for the Austrian, and he is not likely to force his way into the first team any time soon after barely starting any of the first three games for the Hammers. He has been a shadow of the player that he once was at Manchester United since he arrived in East London, and subsequent managers have not been able to get the best out of him. However, his recovery is still a much needed boost for Pellegrini, as his return will give the squad some extra depth that they will need to be a success this season.
