Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has admitted that West Ham United have had one of the most successful transfer windows out of any club in the Premier League.

In his column for Sky Sports, Merson graded the Hammers’ transfer business with an “A”, putting them second only to Liverpool, who he graded with an “A+”.

“They’ve had a go,” he said in his column. “They’ve got Jack Wilshere on a free and people are wondering if he’ll stay fit but you’ll be surprised by how many games he plays. I like their business, they’ve put their money where their mouth is this time around and brought in a better quality of player.

“There are a couple of players who will need time to settle, they’re coming from places where the football is a lot different. Lukasz Fabianski was great last season and I like their business.”

OPINION

West Ham have certainly been busy this summer, bringing in ten signings that have amounted to a total of over £100 million. It is an exciting time to be a Hammers’ fan, as there is the belief that they can go out and beat anyone with the quality of the players that they have brought in. Some supporters may even be optimistic that their team can finish in the top-half of the league table this season, but it is extremely important that they do not get carried away. The new signings need time to settle and get used to their teammates, which does not happen straight away. Playing away at Liverpool on Sunday will give them a huge test as to whether they can hack it with their new players, or whether they are not up to scratch. Pellegrini will undoubtedly be wanting to hit the ground running in their season opener, but it will be a stern task to overcome a Reds team capable of opening up defences with their lethal attack. However, a new sense of positivity is in the air for the Irons’ faithful – and it will be interesting to see what the season brings for them.
