West Ham have confirmed the signing of defensive midfielder Carlos Sanchez.

The club have confirmed the signing of Sanchez on their official Twitter account, posting a picture of the Colombian in the club’s kit ahead of the opening of the new Premier League season.

The 32-year-old joins the Hammers on a two-year deal from Italian side Fiorentina.

The midfield destroyer has Premier League experience, having played for Aston Villa between 2014 and 2016.

OPINION

This is a bit of a strange one. After the wonderful business that has been done by West Ham this summer, Carlos Sanchez stands out like a sore thumb in terms of the difference in quality, for he is not at the same level of the other Hammers signings that have been done in this window. However, this deal needed to be done because the prospect of Pedro Obiang leaving the club to a foreign side is very high, especially with the deadline not closing until the end of August for European sides. He has been heavily linked with a move so this swoop for Sanchez is surely cover for the Spaniard should he leave. The Colombian was average at best in his previous spell at Aston Villa and he flattered to deceive for his national team at the 2018 World Cup, so it does look like a poor signing on the face of it. However, the London Stadium faithful will hope he can make a big impact this season.
