West Ham United are in a dispute with their landlords over the colour of the material that surrounds the London Stadium pitch, according to the Times.

The newspaper reports that the club have successfully petitioned for the green material that currently surrounds the pitch to be changed because it is too similar to the playing surface.

West Ham want it to be replaced with a claret material to match their colours, but they are concerned that the stadium’s landlords want to use a darker blue to match their own branding efforts.

The Times also reports that this is the fourth such case that West Ham have entered into a dispute against their landlords, but that the club have offered to pay the £200,000 cost and maintenance of changing the material.

OPINION

This is one of those disputes that seems a little bit silly on the face of it, but that is of real importance to those involved. West Ham don’t want anything resembling Tottenham Hotspur anywhere inside their stadium, and for them it’s only natural that the material should be in their colours. The landlords of the stadium have their own agenda, however, and they obviously want some consistency in their own branding efforts, hence the dark blue colour they’re favouring. The Hammers have offered to pay the cost so it really shouldn’t be too much of an issue, it simply depends on how stern the landlords will be in defence of their dark blue colour. This move to the London Stadium has been far from an overwhelming success for the club, and the fact that this is their fourth dispute with their landlords is testament to that. Hopefully this one gets resolved sooner rather than later.
