West Ham midfielder Pedro Obiang is set to remain at the club until at least January, according to club insider ExWHUemployee.

The insider – who is a reliable source of information on the Hammers – revealed via a Twitter exchange that the 26-year-old is not likely to depart East London this summer and will stay until January, when the next transfer window is open for business.

Serie A side Sampdoria were chasing Obiang – who is on £55,000 a week [Spotrac] – but the Irons have decided that they wanted to keep hold of the Spaniard in this window.

OPINION

This news will come as a relief to West Ham fans, as Sampdoria were fierce in their pursuit of the midfielder. They thought that they had managed to land him until the Hammers decided that they wanted to keep hold of him, as boss Manuel Pellegrini wanted Obiang as part of his plans for the club. However, that does not rule out another approach by Sampdoria in January, and they are likely to be more persistent this time around after missing out. Obiang undoubtedly wants first team football and he may be getting it at the London Stadium, but will have to challenge Declan Rice and the possible arrival of Carlos Sanchez for the defensive midfield spot in the first eleven. Whether he decides to move in January is unknown, but for the time being he will continue to be a West Ham player – which will be a welcome boost for the team and the manager.
