Championship side Hull City are attempting to hijack Darmstadt’s move to sign West Ham defender Reece Oxford on loan, according to the Daily Mail

The newspaper report that the Tigers are hopeful of completing a swoop for the 19-year-old after making a last-minute enquiry for his services ahead of today’s 5pm deadline.

The Daily Mail claim that Bundesliga 2 side Darmstadt have also enquired about taking the centre-back on a temporary basis, with the 6ft 3in enforcer [Transfermarkt] having spent last season on loan in Germany with Borussia Monchengladbach.

OPINION

A loan exit looks to be a sensible move for both West Ham and Oxford, who is unlikely to get much of a chance in the first-team squad this season. Summer reinforcements at centre-back and in midfield have severely limited his chances of breaking through in the coming months, and another spell away from east London looks to be the best option for his development. Oxford enjoyed his time in Germany last season with Monchengladbach, but you would think that a move to Hull this season would be the best possible switch. Playing in the Championship will give Oxford a good education in English football, which would prepare him best for the rigours of the Premier League with West Ham. A spell in the Bundesliga 2 would be beneficial in other ways, but definitely makes less sense if you consider the big picture. Neither club have much time to complete a deal however, and it could be that Oxford remains at West Ham until January.
