Midfielder Edimilson Fernandes has thanked West Ham United for allowing him to make the move to Serie A club Fiorentina on loan via his personal Instagram.

The 6’3″ [Transfermarkt] enforcer declared his excitement of making the move to Italy, stating on the social media post that “I am happy and excited about this challenge coming for me in Italy with AC Fiorentina. I’ll work hard to help my new teammates and the club.”

Fernandes thanked the Hammers’ board for allowing the season-long opportunity to happen, which was confirmed on the club’s official website on Monday (13 August).

The 22-year-old has been pushed further down the pecking order at the London Stadium after the arrival of Jack Wilshere, only making 48 appearances for the Irons since he moved from FC Sion in 2016.

OPINION

Fernandes’ move to Fiorentina is the best option he could have chosen for his career at the moment, as he was not likely to get a look-in under boss Manuel Pellegrini. The West Ham manager has brought in a host of midfielders, and the three-capped Switzerland international was pushed further down the pile as a result. He is only 22-years-old, so he needs the regular playing time right now, rather than sitting on the bench in the Premier League. Perhaps when he has completed his season-long stint in Italy, he may be ready to challenge for a spot in West Ham’s senior team after gaining the relevant match time experience, but that will be hard with the players the club now has. If he impresses on loan at Fiorentina they may look at acquiring him on a permanent basis, so he must make the most of the opportunity West Ham have given him.
